Superb performance of I'll Remember April from the Tokyo 96 CD.

This Keith Jarrett transcription is a great example of how his trio really make a standard their own. Has a really catchy vamp to open the head that is simple but really nice! I found this transcription lurking around – it’s not my own so apologise for not knowing where it’s come from (if it’s yours, I’m happy to credit you!).

I’ve cut out the 3 minute drum solo that opens the track (sorry Mr Dejohnette) just to keep the MP3 file size down a bit for you. Enjoy!

Two Jarrett transcription ebooks, stuck together!

I can’t remember where I found the original link to these, but they were originally two seperate PDF’s that I’ve stuck into one. Like my last Wynton Kelly post, this ebook is from a rare Japanese publisher, certainly out-of-print in the West as far as I can tell.

Includes selections from Jarrett’s Trio albums Standards Vol 1, Vol 2 and ‘Standards Live’. Enjoy:

The great man's lovely introduction to his 1986 trio recording of My Funny Valentine.

I’ve found this transcription as a freebie on Ravenhood transcription site – a cracking resource, that requires you to pay a very reasonable fee before getting your mits on some excellent Jarrett transcriptions. Well worth checking out for $50.

This transcription is from his 1986 ‘Still Live’ album and is a great example of Jarrett working his way into a standard in his inimitable way.

Solo again - Bregenz parts one, two and four, courtesy of Simon Savery's site.

I’ve recently got hold of a copy of the Bregenz concert – it was about the only solo effort from the great man that I hadn’t got. While I don’t think it’s in the same league as the Lausanne and Bremen concerts, it’s got some lovely moments. ‘Heartland’ is of course terrific, but I love the quiet opening of Part I.

Parts I, II and IV are available below (the first attachment is a zip containing many jpg files).

Scanned copy of Jarrett's opening to his Kyoto concert from the SunBear series...

I love the Sun-Bear concerts. Like all great art, the quality across the 6 CD’s is inconsistant, but when it’s right Jarretts’ ideas and execution is sublime.

One of my favourite moments comes right at the start of the Kyoto concert. I can’t remember where I sourced this particular transcription from – I’ve had it for years – but it originally came from the magazine ‘Contemporary Keyboard‘. By all accounts this magazine looked like it was fabulous so if you know where one can obtain back issues, then do speak up!

Anyway’s here it is scanned for you …..

Savary is one of the very best Jarrett transcribers...

I’ve just come across Simon Savary’s own site. Simon’s transcriptions of KJ are fantastic, my own favourites are the excerpts from his solo concerts which must have been a challenge to notate.

Simon’s site also includes plenty of Jarrett in a trio setting too, so if you’re a piano-player, don’t miss this!
