‘Speak No Evil’ is one of the truly great modern jazz albums – brilliant writing combined with superb improvisational acumen. This ace transcription courtesy of Bert Ligon has concert versions of Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Herbie Hancock playing through the changes. Just brilliant stuff, enjoy.

I like Kenny Barron. But I also like Stan Getz. But which one is best? There’s only one way to find out. FIGHT!
Well alright maybe not. Perhaps just stick them together on a recording and let them play their favourite standards for 2 and a half hours. This is glorious music. Stan was nearing the end during this recording, and while some of the butter has gone from his tone, it only serves to make this music even more honest. This transcription is from the opening track of the double-album, and certainly well worth studying those lovely lines regardless of your instrument.

What’s happened to Joshua Redman anyway? He was one of jazz’s brightest stars about 15 years ago, but for some reason he’s not quite reached – or been seen to reach – the artistic heights of alot of his contemporaries.
No matter, I love his playing. And I especially love his playing on his 2000 album ‘Freedom in the Groove’. It’s probably his most ‘straight-ahead’ album, which is saying something since all the tunes are originals. This selection features 4 tracks from the album and I’ve included some low quality reference MP3′s too.
Have fun, and if you haven’t heard these tracks yet I almost guarentee you’ll want to play these charts after hearing him play them.

I’ve just come across the transcriptions page on the Freejazzinstitute’s site. Lots of really useful stuff here – don’t think I’ve been on this site before, not sure why it’s illuded me for so long….
Wanting to post a Bill Charlap transcription up soon, been listening to alot of him.

I saw Dave O’Higgins and Eric Alexander live on Friday night at Wakefield jazz, so I thought it only right to post a couple of transcriptions. Both Dave and Eric were fantastic – and major CHOPS were on show!
They had a superb rhythm section – including up-and-coming Andrew McCormack on piano – and they swung REALLY hard!
These transcriptions are courtesy of Charles McNeal.

Really nice little book containing the entire performances from that 1958 date, great way of studying the different styles of four (actually, five if you count Wynton Kelly on Freddie Freeloader) great soloists.

Obviously these are for tenor sax, but all instrumentalists can learn lots from his great lines…

For the two people that read this blog regularly
, I must apologise for my lack of posting recently. Nothing bad has happened, I simply haven’t got off my bum to source any new transcriptions.
As other jazzers can probably relate to, my enthusiasm for playing/studying tends to come in waves and every so often I don’t seem to have much inspiration to do either in any great depth.
Anyway, I was listening to Hank Mobley’s Dippin’ Time just yesterday it reminded me how good he really was. Jeff Rzepiela’s site has several Hank Mobley transcriptions, along with those of other top hooters.

I’ve just found this impressive 72 page ebook: which has several transcriptions of Sonny Rollins and – even better – has an analysis of the great man’s playing. There is a link to download the pdf at the bottom of the page if you wish. Grab it while its there is my advice….
