Hello Dan,

Nice site with a lot of good resources. I have posted a few Jim Hall, Rosenwinkel and Ben Monder solos on my own site:
http://jenslarsen.nl/TranscriptionsEng.html

Maybe something for your guitar section.

Best regards,
Jens

Hi Dan, my name is Kate. I am a jazz pianist from Melbourne in Australia. I was just looking for your email on the site but couldn't seem to find it. I'm wondering if you might have McCoy's passion dance left hand during his solo. And herbie's one finger snap solo rh and lh?

Kind Regards,

Kate

Hello,

One error: Bob Keller's video site is really Bob Kaster's video site. That said, you might be interested in my jazz page:
http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~keller/jazz.html
which contains lots of additional resources, including Impro-Visor, a learning resource with some aspects of BIAB but also some novel ones:
http://www.cs.hmc.edu/~keller/jazz/improvisor/

Regards,

Hi Dan,

That was pretty much my view when I set up the site, however I had a conversation 'down the pub' that made me nervous about it all.

Having looked into it, certainly the view in the States seems to be the record label own the music and any recording (be it audio or visual) of it. I've asked around amongst a few site adminstrators and the generally held view is that if they take umbrage at it being online they will simply ask you to remove it in the first instance rather than impose a fine.

What the position is in the UK i've no idea, since there don't seem to be too many sites offering this type of resource. Ethically speaking, as long as its for educational purposes I can't see that it should be a problem but you never know.

Anyway, cheers for that.

Hi Andy - how are you doing? Loving those leadsheets, nice work!

In terms of copyright I think I'm pretty certain that transcribing solo's pose no issue providing you are not making personal gain from them (in terms of selling them, making money).

Where the issue also gets more hazy (i imagine) when ;

a) you're also transcribing a head that has already been published 'properly'
b) when you're transcribing a solo that has also been transcribed.

Most people use transcriptions as a personal learning tool so I wouldn't get too worried about this - it would only be a problem if you were using / selling / distributing the music that you've transcribed. But even then the chances of anything happening is tiny. If you sell your transcriptions on the basis of learning resources I would have a hard time in anyone having an issue with it.

Of course most of this is best-guess opinion of mine!
What do you reckon?

Hey Dan,

You'll remember I e-mailed a while back about my new site, jazznote.co.uk. Things have moved along a little since then, and I've started to put my leadsheet collection online for free as you'll see.

Somebody raised a question very recently about the copyright position on jazz transcriptions generally, and I wondered whether you or any of your followers had any experience of this? Would be curious to know.

Best regards,

Andy

Hi Dan,

I always like to stay on top of new piano transcriptions on the internet and recently came across your site which I was very impressed with. Well done for all you're doing.

I'm just in the process of setting up my own site and thought you might be interested - www.jazznote.co.uk.

I'm using it at the moment to host my own transcriptons and lead sheets, as well as offering a transcription service - I've seen a few sites from the states offering a similar service but nothing in the UK. As I say, still in the process of setting it up, but if you could take a look at it thus far and offer any tips you might have it'd be much appreciated. Not sure how to google-optimise (whatever the expression is) the site so still have much to do.

Best regards,

Hello Dan,
thank you so much for this fine effort. i appreciate all jazz piano transcriptions but especially Keith Jarrett - I'm a hopeless Jarrett worshipper.
